The Spanish stock market trades 378.1 billion euros in 2021

MONTHLY TRADING STATEMENTS FOR BME’S MARKETS

  • The number of trades in the year 2021 amounted to 45.1 million
  • New issues in the Fixed Income markets reach 393.4 billion euros
  • Trading in IBEX 35 Futures in December was up 13.7%

The Spanish stock exchange traded 378.1 billion euros in Equities during 2021, down 11.9% year-on-year. The effective volume traded in December was 27.8 billion euros, 23.5% less than in the same month the previous year and 29.6% less than in November. The cumulative number of trades to the end of December 2021 totalled 45.1 million, down 19% from the previous year, after recording 3.2 million in the last month of the year, down 28.5% from December 2020 and down 21.5% from the previous month.

BME's market share in Spanish equities in 2021 stood at 71.56%. The average spread in November was 5.82 basis points at the first price level (14.7% better than the next trading venue) and 8.55 basis points with order book depth of 25,000 euros (33.9% better), according to an independent report by LiquidMetrix, available here: https://www.bmerv.es/ing/Miembros/MIFID_II.aspx. All figures include both transparent order book (LIT) trading – including auctions – and non-transparent (dark) off-book trading.

The volume traded on the Fixed Income markets reached 234 billion euros in 2021, including the 7.9 billion euros posted in December, a cumulative annual decline of 16.2%. New issues, including Public Debt and Private Fixed Income, amounted to 393.4 billion euros,  a decrease of 2.6% compared to the amount posted in 2020. In December, the volume admitted to trading was 19.7 billion euros. At year-end, the outstanding balance stood at 1.72 trillion euros, down 0.6% from the previous month, but up 4.1% year-on-year.

In the Financial Derivatives, trading in IBEX 35 Futures contracts increased by 13.7% in December compared to the same month of the previous year. There was also a 3.4% increase in Equity Futures trading in 2021. The open interest in Equity Futures contracts at the end of the year increased 33% and by 4.6% in Mini IBEX Options contracts.
