The Spanish Stock Exchange traded €62.6 billion in March

  • The equity trading volume to the end of March totaled €197.4 billion
  • In March the ETFs trading volume reached €751.4 million, with a 12% increase in the number of trades
  • The traded volume in IBEX 35 Futures in the first three months was up 3% year-on-year

Equities 

The equity trading volume on the Spanish Stock Exchange in the first three months of the year totalled €197.4 billion, down 24% from the same period last year, in a context of low trading volumes at world level and lower activity levels due to the Holy Week. In March the trading volume came in at €62.6 billion, down 27% from the same period in 2015.

The number of trades in the first three months of the year reached 15.6 million, down 12% from the same period the previous year. The number of trades in March reached 4.9 million, down 9% from a year earlier.

As for the ETF segment, the trading volume to the end of March came in at €2.2 billion, down 28% from the same period a year earlier. The ETF trading volume in March in this segment came in at €751.4 million, down 1% from the preceding month and down 39% from same period a year earlier.

The number of ETF trades to the end of March totaled 49,081, up 16% year-on-year. In March the number of trades was 14,955, up 12% from a year earlier. 

The trading volume on the Warrants and Certificates market in the first three months of the year totalled €213.6 million, down 36% year-on-year. The trading volume in March came in at €65.2 million, down 43% from the same period a year earlier.

 

Futures and Options

In the first three months of the year there was heavy trading in the main contracts, that is, Index Futures, with 1,920,556 IBEX 35 Futures and 897,166 IBEX Mini Futures traded, up 3% and 5% year-on-year respectively. 

The trading volume in the first three months in the Derivatives market was down 8.9%, at 12.1 million contracts. 

In March trading in Stock Derivatives was higher than last year, with 2.6 million Stock Futures traded, up 3.5% on the previous year and 2.2 million Stock Options traded, up 8.1% year-on-year. 

Futures on Stock Dividends continued growing in the first three months of the year, with trading volume increasing 95.8% from the same period a year earlier and open interest growing 64.7%. Trading in Futures on the IBEX Impacto Dividendo also continued its upward trend, growing 9.8%% in the first three months of the year and posting open interest of 21,119 contracts, up 7.2% from the same period last year.

 

Corporate Debt 

The trading volume on the Corporate Debt market in March came in at €28.8 billion, down 47.1% year on year while in the first three months of the year it totaled €58.2 billion, down 63.4% year-on-year.

New issues reached €26.4 billion in March, up 40.1% from the same period last year while in the first three months of the year it totaled €52.8, down 7.1% from the same period a year earlier. 

The volume of new issues on MARF was €139 million in March, more than double the amount posted in March 2015. In the first three months, new issues totaled €482 million, more than 6 times as high as last year.

In March trading on BME’s Public Debt wholesale electronic platform, SENAF, reached €12.9 billion, up 20% year on year while in the first three months the trading volume totaled €33.4 billion, 19.7% higher than that for the same period last year.
